Chetwynd - Snowmobilers Caught In Avalanche

On January 11, 2009 at 2:17 PM, the RCMP Operational Command Centre received a 9-1-1 call reporting a group of snowmobilers were caught in an avalanche in a remote mountainous area south of Chetwynd. Chetwynd RCMP attended the area where the snowmobiles were deployed. The avalanche occurred approximately 25 kms from the vehicles. One snowmobiler caught in the avalanche is believed to have passed away as a result. All other snowmobilers in the group have been accounted for. The BC Coroners Service, Search & Rescue and an avalanche technician have been called to the scene. Due to the danger of further avalanches, no attempts to retrieve the deceased will be made until the avalanche technician has deemed the area safe. Tomorrow at the earliest.The name, age and other details of the deceased will not be released until identity can be confirmed, next of kin are notified and the Coroner authorizes.

The RCMP would like to remind the public that every precaution should be taken when operating snowmobiles. Please do not operate snowmobiles in area where avalanches are likely or may possibly occur. Further information will be posted to this website as they are made available.
