Fire Taxes Integrated

Starlee Speers - Vernon 105.7 SUNFM:

Residents in Okanagan Landing and the rest of the city will be paying the same for fire protection this year, after council voted to integrate the tax structure Monday. While the move means Landing residents will pay an extra eighty dollars this year, Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert says those residents won't notice a difference in their fire services. Lippert is in favour of the integration he voted against the motion because the decision includes taxing property and improvements. Councillor Patrick Nicol opposes the decision saying it paves the way for integrating fire services, something the volunteer firefighters don't want. Mayor Wayne Lippert says the rest of the city has been subsidizing certain fire services for the Landing. The equalization means about an eighty dollar increase for Landing residents.
