Chetwynd family devastated by highway tragedy

By Cheryl Chan, The Province March 23, 2009

Three family members from a small community in B.C.’s Peace River country are dead after a “catastrophic” two-vehicle crash on a slippery highway Saturday near Dawson Creek. Chetwynd residents Darrell Marshall, 29, girlfriend Candice Norris, 25, and Norris’ father Terry, 50, were travelling north on Highway 97S on their way to Dawson Creek to attend a relative’s funeral when their vehicle skidded on treacherous black ice, lost control, and veered into a southbound pick-up truck. “The damage to both vehicles was catastrophic and all occupants in the passenger vehicle were killed upon impact,” said Sgt. Kurt Peats of RCMP South Peace Traffic Services. Marshall and Norris, who have been together for about a year, left behind a four-month son, Darian. Marshall, originally from Kamloops, moved to Chetwynd earlier this winter to be closer to Norris and her family.

The couple were planning to move back to Kamloops this Friday — a red-letter day for Marshall’s seven-year-old daughter Jazmyne, who has been awaiting her dad and “stepmom” Candice’s arrival eagerly, said Jazmyne’s mom Jessie Taylor, 27, who has known Marshall since they were kids. “It’s very hard for her. She doesn’t understand why he’s not coming back,” a devastated Taylor told The Province Sunday.
