72-year-old faces drug charges

Castanet:

For the second time in a month, a North Okanagan residence has been the subject of a drug warrant execution. The property in the 2700 block of O'Keefe Road in Vernon was searched by RCMP Saturday. Nine people were arrested, including a 72-year-old. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the warrant was obtained under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. “Nine people were arrested in the residence when they executed the warrant. A 72-year-old man is being charged with possession for the purposes of trafficking. He is expected to make his court appearance Monday,” says Molendyk. He says a 46-year-old woman is expected to be charged with possession of a controlled substance and has been released to appear in court at a later date. “Cocaine and several hundred dollars in cash and assorted drug paraphernalia were seized. The residence was posted under the City drug bylaw. This same house was searched on a drug warrant a month ago.”

Police in Vernon arrested nine people during a raid on a home in the 2700 block of O'Keefe Road Monday. "The search of the residence located powder and crack cocaine that was packaged up for an equivalent of 50 street level transactions," says RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk. "Three rifles and a quantity of cash were also seized." Molendyk says all nine people have since been released. Two Vernon men were released on a promise to appear. "They are expected to face charges at a later date in relation to drug and firearms offences." Vernon RCMP Inspector, Steve McVarnock, says this type of crime reduction strategy will continue to be one of the top priorities within the detachment. "It was a priority that has been identified by the community at our annual stakeholders meeting," says McVarnock.
