Peter McIntyre Thursday, 23 April 2009 107.5 KISSFM:
Ground has been broken on a community housing project that has been years in the planning. The "Under One Roof" six-plex at 4100 25 Avenue will provide affordable housing for four families, and two people with disabilities. Annette Sharkey from the Social Planning Council says with completion tentative for December, they haven't got the tenants lined up as yet. "But we know there is a demand out there so we're not worried about finding tenants. As soon as we get over the initial construction, we can start thinking about tenants." Sharkey says they're still looking to the community for donations, but much of the $1.2 million cost has been covered through grants and donations, including $600,000 from BC Housing. Okanagan College Regional Dean John Lent says their residential construction program is providing free labour for the foundation and framing work. "These are the kinds of partnerships that make me really glad that I got this job because I think it's so interesting when community partners get together to do something like this project." The city of Vernon provided the land for the homes. The main partners are Habitat for Humanity, Kindale Developmental Association and the Vernon and District Community Land Trust.
