Starlee Speers - Vernon 105.7 SUNFM
Vernon has become home to a controversial but little known drug detox method for the past year and a half. Sheldon Pelletier with Ivaeda Addiction Interruption says the treatment involves administering a hallucinogenic root extract called Ibogaine. Pelletier says after the week-long treatment, Ibogaine users have little or no drug cravings for three months. The clinic is not registered or Provincially-funded and treats only one patient at a time. A treatment costs five thousand dollars and 28 people have gone through the Vernon clinic so far. Ibogaine is so little known that even the executive director with the North Okanagan John Howard Society hasn't heard of it. A similar clinic was operating on the Sunshine Coast but has since been closed as it couldn't charge enough to cover costs. Sun FM also contacted the Interior Health authority about Ibogaine but has yet to hear back regarding an interview. The hallucinogenic African-shrub root is illegal in the U-S, but not in Canada.
