What are my Taxes

Betty Selin - Vernon 105.7 SUN FM

Vernon taxpayers won't really know what their tax increase is until they get their assessment next month. Mayor Wayne Lippert says they stuck with the original budget with a net effect of 1.99%.

Councillor Bob Spiers says he voted against the budget because it's much too high in these economic times. Spiers says the tax rate is going up 4.82% for all classes, when you take into consideration the NORD services the city is taking over.He says charging fire taxes on raw land will mean huge increases for some property owners - 26.63% .Councillor Nicol was the only other no vote.

Tony Stamboulieh, with the Vernon Taxpayers Association, says the budget is very bad news. He accuses council of rushing to pass the budget and not listening to the concerns raised at the input session. Stamboulieh says when you add increases for city services on top of taxes, people will pay at least 11 per cent more than last year.
