City drives organ donations

The City of Vernon is being urged to join the campaign to increase the number of organ donors. B.C. Transplant is asking council to launch an organ donor drive among city staff as well as to make donor registration forms available at civic buildings. “We want to make Vernon the city with the greatest awareness to save lives,” said Betty McKinnon, with the society and a local transplant recipient. The society also wants its Internet address to be posted on the city’s website. The number of British Columbians who have received a transplant is 4,500, with 300 on the waitlist. “Seventy-four Vernon citizens have received transplants and one is on the waitlist,” said McKinnon. But the problem is not enough people have agreed to become donors. “The need outweighs the supply,” said McKinnon. “Only 16 per cent of B.C.’s population has registered. In Vernon, that translates into 9,756 registrants (or 27 per cent of the population).”
