Peter McIntyre Sunday, 10 May 2009 107.5 KISSFM:
The Vernon Vipers are national Junior A hockey champions after completing a perfect performance at the Royal Bank Cup. The BCHL and Doyle Cup champs won all six games at the tournament in Victoria capped off with a 2-0 win over the Humboldt Broncos in Sunday's final, broadcast on KISS FM and on TSN2. Braden Pimm got the game winner in the second period while tournament MVP Kyle Bigos sealed it with a highlight-reel power play goal in the third. Andrew Hammond picked up the shutout. The Vipers played most of the game without their captain Chris Crowell who got kicked out in the first period for checking from behind. It was the fifth national championship for the Vernon team, the most even by any junior A franchise. The Vipers under the ownership of Dr Duncan Wray have won three Canadian titles--the others in 1996 and 1999, while the Vernon Lakers under owner Mel Lis and coached by Ed Johnstone won in 1990 and 1991.
