School Rezoning Rejected

Peter McIntyre Tuesday, 12 May 2009 107.5 KISSFM:

Neighborhood concerns have derailed plans to rezone a site for a new Vernon School District building. District 22 has been looking at land near Boston Pizza on 33 Street to build a facility for the Alternative Learning Program. The District had applied for public institutional zoning, a change from the current street oriented commercial. However, Mayor Wayne Lippert and a majority of council rejected third reading of the rezoning bylaw, saying the plan was criticized by nearby residents at a public hearing and didn't fit in. "I think that some times we should help out other government agencies in what they're trying to do, but at the same time, it has to fit in with the neighborhood." Lippert says the School District can reapply if they come up with a new proposal that's a better fit with that area.
