The Okanagan Indian Band is clamping down on the information it releases about the fate of Lakeshore Road in Vernon. The band has been threatening to close down a portion of the road near Kin Beach, as part of a land claim dispute. The band's council was supposed to decide today whether the action would go ahead, but after the meeting, chief Fabian Alexis had little to say. He tells KISS FM,"Council has advised me at this time to (say) a simple no comment to any of the questions you may have."Alexis did say the road is open at this point, and the band will let the media know if there's any change to that.
Mayor Wayne Lippert says the city is prepared in case the road is closed. "The fire department, particularly the Okanagan Landing department, have identified alternate routes to use if they need to in the case of emergencies. The RCMP are definitely aware of it so we've taken all the precautions that we can that way." Lippert says the most inconvenience would be to people who live in that area ---and to people trying to get to Kin Beach. He says all the documents indicate the city has the right of way on the road, which he says was signed over to the city by the province when the Landing was annexed in 1993.
