A Vernon councillor is concerned the plan to add paid firefighters in Okanagan Landing could be back up for discussion. Council approved a declassified motion from in-camera, that directed staff to bring forward the Vernon Fire Rescue Policies report, prepared by fire chief Jeff Carlisle, for discussion at its July 27th committee of the whole meeting. Patrick Nicol called council's decision disapointing (he was not present for the committee meeting), adding "we're just revisiting it". Nicol told KISS FM after the meeting, a majority of council voted not to proceed with the plan just two weeks ago. "I can understand those that voted against it may disagree with that but it's not often that we keep revisiting something over and over."
Mayor Wayne Lippert doesn't think it will lead to re-opening the debate. "That part of it, as far as I'm concerned, has been dealt with. The volunteers are going to stay in the volunteer halls and won't become composite halls until council (makes) that decision when it's ready." Lippert says some councillors felt the policies part of the chief's plan didn't get properly dealt with last time.
