Vernon council needs more information before deciding if a cosmetic pesticide ban can start on public sites, this summer. A delegation last meeting from the group Parents for Healthy Playgrounds, requested the ban begin a year earlier than first scheduled, to protect the public's health. Mayor Wayne Lippert says council will discuss the issue at its July 13 meeting after getting a report from the city's Environmental Planner. Lippert says, "There's information out there that shows some of the other methods, when cosmetic pesticides are banned, may be more harmful so we need to make sure there are good and safe alternatives for people to use." The city's current timeline is to ban the chemicals for cosmetic purposes on public land by 2010, and on private property by 2012.
