A hazardous mix of waste is flushed into the sewer every day. The billions of litres of water - combined with unknown quantities of chemicals, solvents, heavy metals, human waste and food - where does it all go? And what does it do to us? Filmed in Italy, India, Sweden, the United States and Canada, this bold documentary questions our fundamental attitudes to waste. Does our need to dispose of waste take precedence over public safety? What are the alternatives?

Don Quixote Note: This is a thought provoking documentary produced in 2003 by the National Film Board of Canada. It is almost 52 minutes long and the topic of sludge (Biosolids) is first discussed at the 18 minute mark and then is the focal point for the rest of the documentary. The evolution of the sanitary sewage from the ancient Romans to modern day is well presented and the evolution of our disposal methods from downstream dumping, ocean dumping, treatment plants, sludge spreading on farmland, burning (briefly), community composting and individual in-house disposal and composting completes the documentary.
