Cutbacks and budget cuts in the midst of Olympic dollars being thrown around isn’t appropriate, according to one Coldstream critic. “It seems like everybody is going to the trough for Olympic frills but money is not available for other things,” said Coldstream Coun. Gyula Kiss. The councillor raised the issue after council agreed to submit a $4,800 grant application under the Olympic Torch Relay Community Grant Program to offset the cost of the torch relay travelling through Coldstream. The funds will be used for: newspaper advertising colour invitations to students at Coldstream schools and Okanagan College, pipers, juice boxes and energy bars for students along the torch route, food and beverage at the end of the route and logistics such as snow removal and waste management. The Torch Relay comes to Coldstream on Day 89, Jan. 26, 2010. It will travel between Kelowna and Revelstoke, stopping along the way at Lake Country, Coldstream, Vernon, Spallumcheen, Armstrong, Splats’In Indian Band, Enderby, Grindrod, Sicamous and Malakwa. These communities (except Vernon) are route communities where each torch bearer carries the torch for 300 metres. The relay will be in Coldstream for approximately 30 minutes. The torch is then transported to Vernon, which is a celebration community hosting an official Olympic celebration.
