A Vernon man is facing an arson charge in connection with a fire at a retirement home over the weekend. Fire broke out at the Orchard Valley Retirement residence in the 2800 block of 34th Street just before 7 p.m. Sunday. Sergeant Dave Evans says 36-year-old Troy Ross Niehaus has been arrested in connection with the fire and has been charged with arson. “He has appeared before a Judicial Justice of the Peace and Crown Counsel is currently determining if he will be released for a future court date or be held for further court appearances,” says Evans. He says fire crews were already on scene containing the fire when the RCMP arrived just before 9 p.m. “No one was injured and at this point it appears the damage to the building has been confined primarily to the exterior.” Damage to the building has been estimated at $60,000.
