Vernon's mayor and council have voted to give themselves a raise. The Mayor and Councillors will now be compensated for attending committee meetings at one hundred 37 dollars per meeting. Councillor Buffy Baumbrough says the meetings she attends involve more work than just attending the meeting which takes her away from her full time job.
Councillor Shawn Lee opposed the remuneration because he wanted more time to research how much extra time committees consumed, but admits his time is "very valuable". Councillors Patrick Nicol and Bob Spiers also voted against the hike.
The new compensation will cost taxpayers an estimated thirty thousand dollars extra a year.

Don Quixote Note: The $30,000 estimate per year is if all Councilors claim for the $137 stipend per committee meeting. It is my understanding that it is not an automatic payment but must be processed by a valid claim submitted for payroll approval.
Therefore I will not be submitting any claims for any committees that I am on that are the subject of this new remuneration policy. I will reconsider this position in late 2011 when the normal council remuneration review is done.
