Jackie, don't take your vote to Steve. (aka Iggy's lament)

You've painted up your lips and waxed your flowing long gone hair,
Jackie are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The foreshadows of the UIC deal tell me that Stevie soon will fight,
Oh Jackie, don't take your vote to the right.

It wasn't me that started this old crazy political war,
But for a time I was proud to be Stevie's left wing whore,
But times have changed, and it's true that I'm not the man I used to be,
But, Oh Jackie, I still need your company.

It's hard to stand with a man who is not even in command
And the wants and needs of a guy your age, Jackie, I understand
But it won't be long, I've heard them say, until Stevie begins to fight
Oh Jackie, don't take your vote to the right.

He's leaving now cause I can hear the tolling of the bell.
The sound I know that soon he'll vote with the caucus from hell.
Jackie, please stay with me and I promise you no regret
Oh Jackie, I’ll give you a spot in a left wing cabinet.
.
Oh Jackie, there’s room in my cabinet.

A rare video of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition playing Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town. An actual live performance from 1972.
