B.C. Housing Minister Rich Coleman says the government will introduce legislation this fall that would give authorities the power to force people to go to homeless shelters. But Coleman says the law will not force them to stay in the shelters once they're there. He says the law is not a government move to clean up Vancouver area streets in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in February. But the B.C. Civil Liberties Association says the law will essentially jail the homeless in shelters.
The law will be introduced in the B.C. legislature sometime this fall.Coleman says the government started to consider the law after a Vancouver woman refused to be take to a shelter last winter and later died in a fire she started in an attempt to keep warm.
