RCMP have a suspect in custody in connection with a fire at a downtown Vernon seniors home.Fire crews rushed to the Orchard Valley Retirement Centre in the 2800 block of 34th Street just after 7 last night. Some landscaping caught fire and then spread to the vinyl siding. By the time it was out, the blaze had reached up three floors, causing smoke damage to three apartments along with the lobby and kitchen.
RCMP Staff Sergeant Cam Percy says it appears to have been deliberately set, and an adult male was arrested near the scene shortly after police arrived."Within 30 minutes of our attendance he was located and subsequently arrested after that." Percy would not get into what evidence or information led police to the man, saying the investigation is still in its preliminary stages..No charges have been laid. The repair bill is estimated at $60,000.
