Leading by example, Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert
helped his city defeat Kelowna in the inter-municipal challenge for International Car- Free Day. Lippert rode his bike to work and used green modes of transportation throughout the day as Vernon council had an 85 per cent participation rate. “I was impressed with my colleagues showing strong leadership and support for this important green initiative,” said Lippert.
Kelowna had only one council member participating, Coun. Michele Rule, who was pleased Vernon’s participation rate was so high. “Vernon beat Kelowna by a wide margin,” said Rule. “I can only say that hopefully our effort is a warm-up for a much stronger turnout next year.”
Vernon city staff took things one step further by teaming up with their co-workers to see which building would have the most participation. Development Services won gold with 59 per cent participation. Water Reclamation won silver (45 per cent) and City Hall took bronze (41 per cent). A total of 376 green kilometres were traveled, which saved the community nearly 71 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. To help raise awareness of the importance of using green modes of transportation, free regional transit was offered to residents of Greater Vernon, Coldstream and Armstrong during the one-day challenge. Ridership increased 20 per cent on challenge day.
