OTTAWA — A new citizenship study guide released Thursday places a stronger focus on Canadian military and domestic history, with more information on national symbols and historical figures. Gone are the references to sustainable development and the page-long, region-by-region breakdown of Canadian provinces and territories from the previous Liberal guide. In their place, a greater emphasis on Canada's formation as a nation — and an altogether different view of how the government sees Canada, and how it would like new Canadians to see themselves.The guide, called "Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship," informs readers early on of their duties, quoting from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.(more)
