Vernon's good citizen of the year for 2009 has been revealed. She's May Correale, a retired nurse. As is the tradition the announcement was a surprise to the winner. "We were having a meeting here (at Vernon Jubilee Hospital) and all of the sudden it was interrupted and everyone came in. It was quite a shock, but a lovely one." Correale has been a member of the hospital auxiliary for 30 years and has served as president among other positions. She's now a lifetime member of the auxiliary. May is the current coordinator of the hospital gift shop and a long time volunteer as well at Hospice House. Good Citizen committee chair Kerry Ann Kendrick says the award is sponsored by the Vernon chapter of the Junior Chamber International. "Part of our saying is that service to humanity is the best work of life, so we tend to give out that award to someone who has been nominated that lives their life according to that." Correale's formal induction will happen during Winter Carnival.
