Vernon mourns death of former mayor

It was with great sadness that the City of Vernon learned of the passing of former Mayor of Vernon, Neil Davidson, QC on January 16, 2010. Following the death of former Mayor, Bob Neil, Mr. Davidson was proclaimed Mayor in June,1979 and ran a subsequent campaign that fall , serving as Mayor from 1980 - 1981. He served with distinction and under his brief leadership oversaw the purchase of Commonage lands to allow for the expansion of the then innovative Spray Irrigation Program.

Serving on Council with Mr. Davidson in 1979-81, Klaus Tribes remembers a decisive colleague, “a good Mayor, always very fair in dealing with his aldermen. The outstanding thing about him was his passion for Vernon, like no one I ever knew.”

In 1997, the City of Vernon bestowed the “Freedom of the City” on Mr. Davidson, an honor given on rare occasions to citizens who have made major contributions to their community. In his citation, Mr. Davidson was honored for “his outstanding dedication and commitment to serving his community and for his continuing role in improving the quality of life in the City of Vernon.”
Paying tribute to Davidson, Mayor Wayne Lippert noted that “A long and distinguished life is at an end, but will not be forgotten by the people of Vernon. Mr. Davidson’s personal and business achievements so often transformed into major benefits for the City in which he lived, and he will be missed by so many good friends. On behalf of City Council and staff, I offer our heartfelt condolences to his family.”
