Community Citizen On Patrol volunteers Recognized by Silver Star Rotary Club

News Release City of Vernon:

Annually the Silver Star Rotary Club present awards to community volunteers for the past year. The local RCMP Police nominated Ken and Sheila NELSON recognizing their outstanding work ‘above and beyond’ in the local Citizens on Patrol program.

Ken and Sheila NELSON started with the Vernon and District Citizens on Patrol in 2007. Since joining this community program and in addition to their normal volunteer hours they have been instrumental in recovering 79 stolen vehicles. These stolen vehicles have originated from other parts of British Columbia and neighbouring provinces. Many of these vehicle recoveries have been made by the couple even while driving to and from their business, and then recalling a vehicle description or license number from a previous volunteer COP shift. This extra work on their part has helped our local RCMPolice, the City of Vernon (which funds the COP program) and the owners of motor vehicles and ICBC in the recovery and return of these vehicles. Knowing Ken and Sheila, they will be humbled by this news and will want to accept this honour on behalf of all members of the COP program. Fellow volunteer COP’s allow time sharing on each shift which allows Ken and Sheila to apply extra time to their special ability to detect and recover stolen motor vehicles as well as maintaining their responsibilities to their duties and members of the COP program.

They will present for their award at the annual ‘Carnival Breakout’ luncheon at the Schubert Center on the 2nd of February, 2010 which starts at 12:30 pm. The Officer in Charge of the North Okanagan Regional Detachment, Supt. Reg BURGESS will be making the presentation. This will be a very proud moment for Ken and Sheila and they will stand representing the Vernon and District Citizens on Patrol (and every member of the COP program who assist making this endeavour possible, your City of Vernon/RCMPolice Safe Communities Unit, the City of Vernon and the local RCMPolice who nominated Ken and Sheila as worthy recipients. There is also a monetary award of $600.00, which the Nelsons’ have graciously decided to donate to ‘COPS for KIDS’. When you see Ken and Sheila, please offer your appreciation for a job well done!
