A big real estate deal has been signed in the North Okanagan. Vernon realtor Don Kassa has confirmed to SUN FM that a group of investors from the Lower Mainland have bought the 91.7 acre site in Lavington that used to be home to the glass plant. The deal comes after months of environmental checks and discussions. He refused to disclose the price tag although the asking price was 9.7-million dollars. US company, Owens-Illionois, closed the glass plant itself in October, 2008 with the loss of 300 jobs. Kassa says the new group is considering subdividing the land and encouraging a number of businesses onto it.
Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick has been cautious in his first reaction to the deal. He says council still wants to know more about how the new group wants to use the site. Garlick says council hopes there will be plenty of jobs created once it is known how that land will be used.
