The Vernon RCMP have been doing some spring cleaning--- at homes that contain marijuana grow ops. The Mounties "Green Team" has taken down six grow ops in Vernon, Coldstream and the BX in the last week. RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk says most of the busts start with public tips but he says the process can take up to 2 months before there's an arrest. "The officers then have to do some background information so they can get enough information to get a warrant to go in (to the house) so they have to find out who lives in the residence, what's the activity, can they get close enough to perhaps smell it themselves?Molendyk says in total 1,621 plants were seized at the six operations, along with 33 pounds of dried bud and some hash. Eight people were arrested and police are looking for one more.
The biggest grow op was in the 7817 Cactus Drive in Coldstream where 547 plants and 28 pounds of harvested marijuana were seized. A 53 year old man arrested inside the home will be facing charges. Molendyk says the enforcement was taken after getting tips from the public including one on 16th Street in Vernon. In that case, people using the the ball diamonds and peanut pool in Lakeview Park phoned police to complain about regularly noticing the smell of marijuana.
