Vernon's busiest intersection will be the subject of five million dollar upgrade this summer. Reid Drummond is the BC Transportation Ministry's project manager for improvements to Highway 97 and Highway 6 by the Fruit Union Plaza. "We're going to have dual opposing left hand turn slots so westbound off Highway 6 and eastbound off 25th Avenue will have two left hand turn slots (currently there's just one) on each leg of that intersection, so increasing capacity off Highway 6 and 25th Ave onto Highway 97." Drummond expects the project will go out to tender by June, with construction through the summer, and completion in the fall. He says a lot of the work can be done outside the existing roadways, minimizing the impact to motorists.
"But one of the other things we probably will be looking at, and what worked really well for us through Kelowna last summer, was doing a lot of the work that would be on-line at night, so when the traffic volumes are a lot lower." The public is invited to view plans of the upgrade at Wesbild Centre Thursday from 5 to 8pm.
