A man with a long history of community involvement has been chosen to lead Greater Vernon's hosting of the BC Winter Games in 2012. Akbal Mund has been chosen by a selection committee as the president. Mund, an area partner with Inland Restaurants, is associated with a number of high profile events such as the Wendy's Dreamlift Day. Jim McEwan, Executive Director of Funtastic, will serve as vice-president. Mund calls it an incredible honor, and expects the area will put on a great Winter Games despite a challenging couple of years until then. Over 2,300 athletes and coaches are expected to take part in the games in February 2012, which will require 2,500 volunteers. Mayor Wayne Lippert thanked the members of the nominating committee, chaired by Patrick Nicol, for all their work and selection of candidate for the top job. "The Nominating Committee has made a great choice, and I want to congratulate Mr. Mund on his appointment and thank him for taking on the Games. It's a major undertaking, but Akbal's reputation precedes him, and I know that he and Jim McEwan will do a great job and I look forward to working with them."
