Farmers React to Restrictions

Stage Three water restrictions are being imposed on all Greater Vernon water users, including agricultural users. Vernon orchardist Tom Ouchi says farmers can probably cope with the Stage Three rules which mean a 20 percent watering reduction for agriculture. However he says Stage Four could seriously hurt tree fruit farmers. He says more information is needed on agriculture's exact water allocation under the restrictions. Ouchi says orchardists need to keep their trees alive or it could be years for a business to get up and running again. Water officials say open houses will be held to ensure farmers and other big water users are informed of the restrictions and the reasons behind them.
