Gakhal Anniversary

It was 14 years ago (Monday) when Mark Chahal murdered his estranged wife and eight other members of the Gakhal and Saran families as they prepared for a family wedding. Shock over the slayings reverberated throughout Canada. The executive-director of the Vernon Women's Transition House, Debbie Hamilton, says it serves as a devastating reminder of the impact of domestic violence. Hamilton, says the event was an extreme example of the domestic violence which occurs every day. She says more women are killed in domestic violence cases than in gangland slayings. A candlelight ceremony to remember the victims of the deadly event will be held outside the Vernon library at 6 pm. Hamilton says while the families have moved on, there will never truly will be closure for them.
