Vernon Hospital On New Funding System

B-C is expanding a system to pay hospitals---like Vernon Jubilee----according to the number of people they treat instead of being handed a set amount of money.Health Minister Kevin Falcon says hospitals will have an incentive to get a higher number of patients out the door faster because they'll be competing with other facilities. He says so-called patient-focused funding will apply to procedures such as hip and knee surgeries, adding that a pilot project has already proven hospitals provide faster service if they're paid for each procedure. What happens in Canada right now, if we're honest with the public, is that we ration election procedures, and what this (new system) does if flip it on its head and say we are going to reward you hospitals if you are doing a better job of dealing with patients, and that means they will do things differently." Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton 's hospital are among 23 of B-C's biggest hospitals that will be funded on a per-patient basis. The Hospital Employees Union and New Democrats say forcing hospitals to compete with each other for services hurts the over-all quality of health care.
