B.C. government laying off 294 employees in a third round of job cuts

Cindy E. Harnett, Times Colonist April 12, 2010

The B.C. government, citing budget pressures, has issued 294 layoff notices in a third round of public-service job cuts. The Ministry of Forests and Range will lose the most jobs, with more cuts to come by the summer. Of the 294 notices issued Monday, 204 are in the Forests Ministry and 38 in the Integrated Land Management Bureau. The remaining cuts are in the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. The forestry jobs range from head office to field operations, including 22 in compliance and enforcement. They are spread across the ministry’s 28 offices, but 37 per cent are in Victoria. The government has issued 730 layoff notices since September. In a letter to employees, Allan Seckel, head of the B.C. public service, called the layoffs an “unfortunate and difficult outcome of the government’s continued efforts to responsibly manage through the impact of the economic downturn. “But it is important to keep in perspective that the vast majority of our employees continue to have a secure and promising career future with the B.C. public service,” Seckel wrote.

I'm all for cutting the bloated bureaucracy. Trouble is these job cuts are coming at the lowest levels; right where the rubber hits the road. This represents a direct impact on service levels.
When are these misguided politicians going to realize that the place where they need to slash the most is at the top end of the food chain.
All levels of government bureaucracy are heavily weighted at the top. An admirable quality in women: not so much when it comes to tax dollars.
