Victoria, B.C. - Victoria police officers who helped out during the Vancouver 2010 winter Olympics racked up $365,000 in overtime costs, which will be covered by the RCMP’s Integrated Security Unit. The unit facilitated and organized all security operations for the 17 days of the Olympics with the help of 6,000 police officers from 118 RCMP and municipal departments across Canada. At least 100 Vancouver Island police officers, including 51 Victoria police officers, were in Vancouver for the Games doing everything from traffic and crowd control to securing Olympic venues.
Victoria police spent $177,345 in overtime fees during the Olympic torch relay which started in Victoria Oct. 30. The department also shelled out $60,000 for a public backup radio communication to make up for the shortcomings of the CREST radio system. The Victoria police board asked the Vancouver Organizing Committee to recover some of its costs. VANOC rejected that request, saying that former mayor Alan Lowe signed an agreement stating the city would bear all costs related to the event.
