Vernon residents and business will be shelling out more cash for garbage service.The residential rate is going up 25 percent --- from $19.23 to $24.12 a quarter--- while the commercial fee will rise 5 percent.Councillor Bob Spiers says the hike is due to NORD increasing its tipping fees from $62 a tonne to $75/tonne effective July 5, 2010, to cover the costs of one day closing down the Greater Vernon landfill. Spiers says, "They are planning to put some of the money into a reserve for the ultimate decommisioning of the dump. That's required by the provincial government." City operations manager Shirley Koenig says the bylaw rate increases will generate approximately $385,000 in additional revenue that will be offset by increased contract expenses. Recycling costs are also rising, from $22 a year, to $33.

So City garbage rates are increasing 25% because NORD increased tipping fees by 19%. Where is that extra 6% going?
Even worse, recycling costs are increasing 50% (!!!).
What is the rationale for this increase? Tipping fees are for garbage, not for recycling.
Why a 50% increase in recycling fees? How much additional revenue will this generate for the City?
