Junction Not Yet A Function

Local government is debating the merits of government funding for Vernon's Teen Junction. The agency that helps at risk youth is asking for at least $66,000 annually, or to become a function of the regional district, to maintain programs. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chairman Wayne Lippert feels it's money well spent, and helps reduce crime. "I think that the costs are hugely offset because you're not see such high costs in the courts and other types of (social) programs." BX Silver Star director Mike Macnabb says it's outside of their focus. "It's not part of the mandate of parks and culture and rec as we currently have it." Macnabb also feels service clubs and churches may be able to provide funding for groups like the Junction. "There are other organizations in the community that should perhaps be stepping up to the plate to assist with these things. It shouldn't always be coming back to the board through the taxpayers."Macnabb says instead of making the Junction a function of NORD, he would prefer giving the group a grant.

Area B director Mike Gavinchuk says NORD can't just be giving out money to every group that wants it. "The idea is right because some children need extra support, but they don't teach life skills there for the kids." The Junction's request has been sent to Vernon and Coldstream councils for input, and to get more info.

This is not the responsibility of local government-if Flippert wants to fund it,then let him put up his own money-we the taxpayers have been robbed enough by this guy constantly trying to curry favour so he can get re-elected
