A fireworks display turned ugly Saturday night at Magna Bay on the Shuswap. It's an annual event that draws hundreds of spectators, and there were many boats on the lake watching. When it was over at 11pm, a speed boat slammed into a houseboat, killing one person and sending nine to the Royal Inland Hospital. A source says the injuries ranged from minor to critical. Ambulances from Kamloops, Chase and the Shuswap responded, as did a number of Search and Rescue teams. So far, no official word from the RCMP.

One man is dead following a late night boating collision on Shuswap Lake Saturday. RCMP say an 18-foot Campion 'runabout' speedboat collided head-on with a 40-foot houseboat near Magna Bay at approximately 11:20 p.m. Calling the crash “surreal and tragic,” RCMP say upon collision the speedboat vaulted into the main cabin portion and was completely embedded in the interior of the houseboat. The operator of the privately owned houseboat, a 40-year-old Anglemont man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Thirteen people were on board the houseboat and three were in the speedboat. Eight people were transported to hospital in Kamloops with various injuries. RCMP Corporal Dan Moskaluk says two of the injured remain in hospital.
“Other boaters in the area assisted immediately and rendered first aid to the occupants of the houseboat and speedboat,” Moskaluk says. "The Chase RCMP Victim Assistance Personnel was also called out to help, given the traumatic stress that a high casualty incident such as this causes to the direct victims, to the general public who rendered assistance in the first instance and to our emergency services crews who responded." Maureen McMillan, of the Anglemont Inn, says several guests had been on board the houseboat earlier that evening to view an annual fireworks display. The guests came back to their room at 12:15 a.m. McMillan says. Upon hearing the news of the crash, McMillan says, “they were shaken up.” Transport Canada and RCMP West Coast Marine Services will be investigating the incident along with the Chase RCMP detachment.
