The regional district is hoping higher fees will get more people to sort out their recyclables when using local landfills. Facilities manager Dale Danallanko says regulated materials will cost 145 dollar a tonne (ton) to dispose, as of today, almost double the regular tipping fee. He says that includes things batteries, mattresses , propane tanks, glass and tires. NORD staff will be inspecting loads to make sure people are complying. Styrofoam has been part of the local recycling program for a few months and so far the response has been good, even though it has a cost. Facilities manager Dale Danallanko says regular disposal fees apply at their sites the new styrofoam recycling program is going very well. A special machine is used to break down the foam which has to be clean. He says they've seen quantities far in excess than what they expected.
