Grass fire near Armstrong forces evacuation of 10 homes

Vancouver Sun July 19, 2010

A grass fire in the north Okanagan has forced crews to evacuate 10 homes as a precaution, officials said late Sunday night. Brent Watson, emergency management coordinator for Vernon Fire Rescue Services, said the 0.2-hectare fire is in the Gradview Flats area of Spallumcheen, B.C., near Armstrong. Watson is calling the evacuation a "tactical" move, adding that an emergency reception centre has been set up in Armstrong. The fire has been contained, Watson added. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although officials noted there was a lightning storm in the region at the time of the fire.
