A startling pronouncement from Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert at Monday's council meeting. He says a decision by the Regional District board to release Vernon from the fire dispatch agreement has left other North Okanagan areas without a call-out service. The board decided last week to negotiate a new contract with Fraser Valley dispatch in order to save money. Lippert says the City won't quit answering the telephone calls but it wants clarity on how payment to Vernon is going to be made. He says that so far, NORD staff have not responded to Vernon's requests for clarity on the issue. Lippert says the City is also owed the balance paid for district dispatch which could amount to 100-thousand dollars.
