Fire Centre Costs

Vernon city councillor Jack Gilroy is steamed up over the cost of firefighter training and the Jaws of Life -- both functions run by the North Okanagan Regional District. Gilroy is urging council to get out of more Regional District functions. He says city taxpayers are being ``fee'd to death'' by the District when it comes to the Jaws of Life and the fire training centre. He says that centre is costing Vernon about 100-grand a year, yet city firefighters use it only 16 times during a 12-month period. Councillor Patrick Nicol spoke against Gilroy's motion, calling it a knee jerk reaction to recent events. However councillors have asked staff to come back with more information on the cost of those functions and will discuss it at the next council meeting.
