Vernon's food bank continues to see an increase in usage. The Salvation Army's Dave MacBain says it's been busy. Last year we saw I believe it was 26 percent over the year, and year to date to the end of July this year, we've seen an additional 14 percent. That's another big jump." MacBain says they're in need of canned pasta, any tomato product and canned fruits and vegetables. "We're okay for soup right now, but other items like stews and tomato products you can build a meal around, is really helpful." Meantime, MacBain says the gleaning program is paying off. A volunteer is co-ordinating fruit and veggie collection from gardens and orchards. After people have harvested what they need, or can't reach some, a crew will be sent to finish picking. A third of the product goes to the grower, a third to the volunteer crew, and a third goes to the food bank and other societies like the Upper Room Mission. MacBain asked anyone wishing to volunteer their garden items to call the Salvation Army at 250 549 4111.
