BELLEVILLE, Ont. — The Mayor of Belleville, Ont., took to the airwaves on Monday insisting he has "absolutely not" had an affair with the town's chief of police, despite rumours otherwise. "There's a lot of good people who know this is a crock," Neil Ellis told local radio station CJBQ. The rumours began circulating more than two weeks ago, after Belleville Police Chief Cory McMullan revealed she had been the victim of an alleged domestic assault on Aug. 6 in an incident that left her husband facing charges.
Gossip surrounding her husband's alleged motive prompted the mayor to admit on Monday he was with McMullan shortly before the alleged assault took place. McMullan offered Ellis a ride to a nearby mall, where the pair were confronted by the chief's husband. "He starts screaming at me that I've been with the chief all night," Ellis said. The two grappled, he added, but no one was hit.
