Second UBCO Bus Meeting

A regionally funded second bus to UBC Okanagan is still a possibility, according to Vernon's mayor. Wayne LippertWayne Lippert (pictured) says NORD has passed a motion to have a committee meeting next month reviewing details about the second bus. "They can get all the information and decide what they want to do.There seemed to be some confusion about what the route was." Lippert says some regional partners didn't know the bus will also make stops at the Kelowna Airport and Okanagan College's Vernon campus, including early morning trips and some up to 8 at night, something he says the college has been looking for, for some time. At this point, Vernon is the only community willing to fund the $120,000 a year service, set to start this fall. Rural Enderby director (Area F) Herman Halvorson, who is also NORD's chairman, doesn't appear supportive, as he believes nobody from his area is using the first bus to the university which all the partners are funding. He thinks most of the riders are from Vernon and Coldstream. The heavy demand for the orginal bus is the reason why a second bus was pursued.

The current BC Transit fares, Vernon to Kelowna are listed as $2.50. That equates to .0417 cents per KM.

The equivalent fare for a considerably shorter distance from Vancouver to Surrey is $5.00 and a estimated cost of .125 cents per km.

Someone in this area needs to start asking some definitive questions about the fares in the Vernon area.
