Fire Bug Targets Area

A fire bug hit the Greater Vernon area early this morning with a string of Molotov cocktails from the BX through the city and into Okanagan Landing. While it appears there was no serious damage in the four or five incidents, the potential was high. Landing fire chief Ed Forslund says their closest call was a car at Kin Beach that lost a rear tire and was scorched, with a second car only singed. The easiest response was for a call to a power pole right by the BX-Swan Lake fire hall.Gord MolendykThe RCMP'S Gord Molendyk (pictured) says they have no suspects."We're asking the public, anyone with any information on the individual or individuals, that are throwing these Molotov cocktails, to contact either the Vernon RCMP or Crime stopper."Molendyk says the person responsible is putting lives of residents in danger."We have the fire department rolling to the scene to put the fire out, and then you have the potential for fire breaking out and harming people."Police say there were two similar attacks a couple of weeks ago.

Vernon hit with Molotov cocktail spree CHBC News, Kelowna September 10, 2010

Vernon RCMP and firefighters were kept busy with a series of four fires early Friday caused by Molotov cocktails. The first incident happened around 2:30 a.m. when the Swan Lake Fire department received a report of a grass fire around a power pole near the intersection of L&A Road and Silver Star Rd. The investigation into the fire revealed a Molotov cocktail had been used. Then at about 4:30, an RCMP officer noticed a flash then discovered a fire burning near two parked vehicles on the 3500 block of 24th Avenue. Both suffered tire damage from the fire. The remains of a Molotov cocktail was also found burning at the scene. A third was found burning in the 3100 block of 16th Avenue about 10 minutes later. Burn marks were found on a parked vehicle beside the unexploded Molotov cocktail. Then about 15 to 20 minutes later the Okanagan Landing Fire Department called to advise that they were putting out a fire by the bridge near Kin Beach, also started by an exploded Molotov cocktail. Police are looking into these incidents to determine if they are related to last week’s fires near The Rise off of Tronson Rd, in which a parked boat and a parked GMC Suburban were damaged by a Molotov cocktails.
