The City of Vernon is set to approach BC's Solicitor General to ask for help in recovering more of the hefty cost of policing. Mayor Wayne Lippert says a staff report shows the city is ``greatly subsidizing everybody else'' in the North Okanagan, especially on the support side. He believes the City is being short-changed by the RCMP's integrated policing strategy in North Okanagan. Lippert points out the City alone pays the salaries of 33 municipal staff which work side-by-side with the RCMP. He says a staff report shows other communities are not paying their fair share of rent. Council has decided to ask Solicitor General Michael de Jong to step in and help Vernon recover some of that money. Vernon officials also plan to talk directly to RCMP officers involved in 2012 contract negotiations.

Whine, whine, whine!
When there are regional districts and cities near by, It does seem like the much higher taxes the town people pay does subsidize the regional district. The new library.... how much is the regional district contributing? You can be sure the regional district folks will be using the library! per capita do the rural folks pay their share???? If the regional district wants these and other services for the regional residents, they need to be prepared to contribute!
