Okanagan Symphony Orchestra members put out the begging bowl Tuesday, appealing to the City of Vernon for 50-thousand dollars in annual funding. New general manager Scott Wilson told a surprised council that Kelowna provided that amount each year. Wilson point out that tens of thousands of dollars in provincial funding had been lost and more was expected to go in the next budget year. He told reporters later that ``if we don't get all of our request, we're still better off if we get something. But we have to start somewhere because we really are short in a major way from the provincial government.'' Councillor Patrick Nicol pointed out that six-grand was provided yearly through the North Okanagan Regional District and that Vernon was one-sixth the size of Kelowna. Nicol said he believes the NORD funding should increase, perhaps to Penticton's nine-thousand dollar annual grant.

Why aren't the patrons of the Okanagan Symphony paying for same?
I don't think single mothers and low wage earners are interested in subsidizing this activity for retired swivel servants and the Jr. League Ladies.
Up the ticket prices-don,t put the burden on the taxpayer
