Courtenay council has opened the door to allowing more slot machines at Chances Courtenay. Playtime Community Gaming Centres Inc., which operates Chances at 361 Hunt Pl., has applied to amend the city’s zoning bylaw to remove the restriction on the number of slot machines for the facility — which is currently limited to 100. The amendment would allow the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) to install slot machines as determined by market demand. Councillors gave the bylaw first and second reading Monday. A public hearing will be held Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.
Playtime is requesting that the limit on slot machines be removed. “It was an arbitrary limit when the BCLC proposed it, and it has since been removed,” said Arthur Villa, co-ordinator of business development for Playtime. “What we’re asking is that you let us — and by us, I mean not only Playtime Gaming but also the Lottery Corporation — use our experience and criteria to service the Comox Valley gaming market as it matures, stabilizes and grows.” Chances has been operating in Courtenay since Feb. 29, 2008.
