Valley Symposium - Time to plan for transportation

The future of vehicular traffic in the Okanagan as well as rail and transit be the focus of a symposium that's expected to be held sometime before Christmas. Transportation Minister Shirley Bond told Vernon's delegation Wednesday that her staff would be setting up the meeting. Vernon Chamber of Commerce General Manager Val Trevis has welcomed the news. She says the transportation issue has been driven by the Valley's Chambers since they made a startling discovery earlier this year. Trevis says there has been no longterm planning and that has to change. She says this is the second-fastest growing area in the province and that longterm planning is a must.

Mayor Wayne Lippert has also had assurances that work to improve road safety at Highway 97 and Birnie Road, south of Vernon, will be going ahead. Transportation Minister Shirley Bond gave that assurance this week at a meeting held at the UBCM convention in Whistler. Safety features were recently added to the accident-prone intersection of Bailey Road, at the Predator Ridge turnoff and Lippert says, ``She is committed to going through a similar process on Birnie Road".

The Valley's Chambers have been asleep if they did not realize until this year that there are no long term plans for transportation in the Valley. In point of fact they are just as ignorant as Vernon council who say nothing on the issue.
