Casino Workers Seek New Deal

Lake City Casino and the BCGEU have begun contract talksUnion and management have launched bargaining on a new contract for Lake City Casino staff in Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton and Kamloops. BC Government and Service Employees Union rep Brian Gardiner says they started talks Monday in Kelowna, with plans to go for three weeks. He tells KISS FM, "The union and employer traded non-monetary proposals first. That's the tradition that's done. We're not going to say much of anything about what's in the proposals."  Gardiner will say they're looking for some stability in the current economic times. 387 staff representing all aspects of casino operations, have been without a contract since September.  87 of the workers are employed at Lake City's Vernon operation.

If as the Union states they have been without a contract since September, are we to assume they have been working for nothing?

BC labor legislation mandates that all terms of the date expired will continue until such time as a new agreement is reached.
